The record for a traffic jam (measured since 1980) was of 344 km on May 23, 2014. With over 5 million vehicles in the city, even a minor accident in a major avenue can cause a major collapse.

When Brazil plays on the WC there is a whole logistic scheme to let employees go home with up to 3 hours prior to the game. So that you have an idea of what this means in terms of traffic, I’ve captured the before and during from 5 live cams: 2 hours before today’s game against Mexico and 45 minutes after the beginning of the game (16:00 local time):
